Macedonia the Country - a small and beautiful country nestled in the southeast of Europe, bordered by Serbia to the north, Albania to the west, Greece to the south and Bulgaria to the east. Macedonia offers a unique blend of natural wonders, traditions and cultures as well as a long tradition of unrivaled hospitality.

The capital is Skopje, with 500,000 inhabitants. It has more than 50 natural and artificial lakes and sixteen mountains higher than 2,000 meters (6,550 ft) above sea level.

The country is a member of the UN, the Council of Europe and a member of La Francophonie, the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Since December 2005 it is also a candidate for joining the European Union and has applied for NATO membership.

Throughout its history, the present-day territory of Macedonia has been a crossroads for both traders and conquerors moving between the European continent and Asia Minor. Each of these transiting powers left its mark upon the region, giving rise to a rich and varied cultural and historical tradition. Although Macedonia is a young state achieving independence in 1991, its roots run deep in ancient history.
